[DIY] How to Fix a Sagging Sofa Seat (Quick & Easy Version) | Fast Webbing Tape Replacement

I’ve also posted a separate article on how I repaired the sagging seat of our Muji “Tamo Wood 3-Seater Sofa.”

[DIY] How to Fix a Sagging Sofa Seat (Disassembly, Webbing Tape Replacement, and Quick Repair Tips)
I personally repaired the sagging seat of my sofa at home.Over time, I tested multiple repair methods: a basic quick fix...

I included a shortcut (quick-fix) version of the repair in that previous article. During a long holiday, I had more time, so I further optimized and improved the process.

Now, the seat cushions of our Muji “Tamo Wood 3-Seater Sofa” have started to sag again, and I’m working on repairing them.

Review of the Previous Article (Full Restoration Version)

I carried out the work described in [this linked article] previously. Here’s a quick recap:

Out of the three sofa cushions, I completely disassembled one and replaced the webbing tape (elastic belts).
It was a pretty full-on job — taking photos and thinking through the process as I went — and it took about 10 hours per cushion.

The original webbing tape was green, and the new one I purchased was black.
I bought the webbing tape shown below on Amazon and used it for this repair.

Review of the Previous Article (Quick-Fix Version)

Reflecting on how long the first cushion took (and frankly not feeling up to doing the same process again), I went for a shortcut with cushions two and three.
First, I cut away the non-woven fabric on the back to expose the existing webbing tapes.

I shortened the original webbing tapes by stapling them with a staple gun, essentially “sewing” them tighter to improve support.
For this, I purchased the KONYO STP-1214 staple gun (tacker) shown below.

I used this shortcut method to repair two of the cushions.

Although this shortcut version improved the seat compared to before, the comfort is still worlds apart from the full repair.
It’s also easy to imagine that the rubber in the stretched webbing tape will continue to lose elasticity and stretch further over time.

Optimized Procedure for the Quick-Fix Version

I considered and implemented a new approach.
On the back side mentioned above, I attached a fresh webbing tape on top of the old one by fastening it with a staple gun.
This way, the new tape is intended to support the weight instead of the weakened original tape.

When you use the staple gun, the staples only shoot into the material; they don’t bend and close like a regular office stapler.
I manually bent the backs of the driven staples to secure them in place.

In this setup, it was quite difficult to staple the tapes together while keeping them fully stretched, but I was able to do it with a moderate amount of tension.
When I disassembled the seat earlier, it was much easier because I could use the wooden frame edges to pull the tape tight before stapling.

For the first cushion, I used two strips of tape both vertically and horizontally.

I performed the same procedure on the last remaining sofa cushion as well.
For this one, I increased the number of vertical webbing tapes to four.

That completed the process.

The seat sagging seems to have improved significantly compared to the previous shortcut version, and my family’s feedback has been very positive.

If everything continues to hold up well, I plan to close the underside with a breathable fabric.
